Without rust and coating cycles

GRP does not rust and, unlike steel, is not susceptible to conventional rust corrosion. Depending on the application, this can eliminate the need for additional anti-corrosion coatings and the associated rework.

Easier to convert

GRP profiles have a density of around 1.8 to 2.0 g/cm³, whilst steel has a density of around 7.8 g/cm³. Their lower weight makes them easier to handle and can simplify transport and installation in existing systems.

Electrically insulating

GRP is electrically insulating and non-conductive. Whether the specific design meets the required insulation values for the relevant part of the plant should be checked against the project data.

How is the chemical resistance of GRP assessed?

It is not possible to make a general statement about the durability of every GRP component. The assessment should take into account, amongst other things, the resin system, the specific chemical, its concentration, the temperature and the duration of contact. A project-specific material recommendation can be derived from this combination.

Which resin system is suitable for my application?

The selection is based on the chemical and thermal stresses, as well as the mechanical requirements. The available process data can be used to determine which resin system and component design appear suitable for the intended application.

Can GRP be exposed to chemicals or moisture on a long-term basis?

A durable bond may be possible if the material composition and resin system are tailored to the actual conditions. Factors to be taken into account include, amongst others, the chemical used, its concentration, the temperature, cleaning methods and any potential interactions.

What should you bear in mind when temperatures are high?

As the temperature rises, mechanical properties and chemical resistance may change. When designing the system, therefore, both sustained and peak temperatures should be taken into account, as well as the simultaneous chemical load.

Is GRP suitable for areas at risk of explosion or where fire safety is a concern?

Whether GRP is suitable for a potentially explosive or fire-safety-relevant area must be assessed on a project-by-project basis. Depending on the requirements, flame-retardant or antistatic versions may, for example, be necessary. Fire behaviour, electrical properties, the earthing concept and any necessary approvals should be agreed at an early stage.

What information is required for a project enquiry?

For an initial technical assessment, details of the chemical used and its concentration, operating and peak temperatures, loads, dimensions, installation conditions and applicable specifications may be helpful. Drawings, photographs or existing specifications can also assist with the assessment.
